The Race

After many years of talking about Cape Town as been the perfect city in which to hoast an international summer pigeon race we have finally taken the decision to offer the race as from January 2020.

Cape Town is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and is the home of our wonderful Table Mountain and some of the best beaches that you will find anywhere in the world today.

We have a host of wine farms and some of the best restaurants imaginable to visit.

The above highlights the fact that a well run international pigeon race is suited for Cape Town. Bring your family along and while you are busy with the final race your family will have the option to explore one of the most beautiful regions in the world.

The race itself will be a tough race due to the weather at this time of the year. The temperature in the day ranges from 23 degrees to 30 degrees plus and the prevailing wind at this time of the year is the famous South Easter or as locals call it the Cape Doctor. The Cape Doctor implies that all illnesses in the air or simply blown out to sea. Although the Cape Doctor may dispose of the illnesses in the air it certainly will provide a challnge for the pigeons as it will be very much of a head wind from the start to the finish line.

The best way to accomodate the pigeon race would be to ensure that the liberations take place as early as possible in the morning, which is easily achievable with sunrise at 05h30, before the strong wind and the heat become a major challenge.

The average daylight is 14 hours at this time of the year and generally the pigeons that are not back by mid day trickle in as soon as the heat begins to fade in the late afternoon.

In order for the race to be successful on a large scale we have decided to limit the intake to 500 pigeons for 2020. This gives us an opportunity to test the route, the timing and the general obstacles that may come our way.

Once we have perfected the procedures in the first year we will double the allowable intake in year two to accomodate 1000 pigeons.

We will be sending out details of the country coordinators as soon as we have confirmation from the persons we have asked.

More details to follow....
